What fills the gap

The Wellcome Collection is four minutes west along the Euston Road, free, and holds galleries that run from a walking stick that belonged to Darwin to objects nobody should have kept. It is the single best hour this road can offer at no cost, and it gives two people something to talk about that is not work.

Drummond Street runs behind the station, two minutes from the platforms, and four or five kitchens along it have been feeding this neighbourhood since long before anybody wrote about them. Diwana Bhel Poori House is the oldest of them, with formica tables and a Gujarati thali that arrives faster than you expect. Euston Square Gardens, with its old plane trees, is the only green thing at this end of the road and is usually half empty.

Rooms, and which road they are actually on

WC1H 0HT is the closest large hotel to the platforms, a minute or two from the taxi rank, and the one most guests mean when they say they are staying at Euston. NW1 2AJ is six or seven minutes east along the Euston Road and is nearer the other terminus than this one. WC1H 8EG is eight minutes east, facing King's Cross across the road, and has the better bar of the three by most accounts.

One minute to the platforms

Euston station is a minute from the hotels facing it and carries the Northern and Victoria lines together with the west coast mainline. Euston Square, four minutes west, is on the Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines and is the one to use for anything crossing town. King's Cross St Pancras is eight minutes east on foot, which is worth remembering when a companion is coming from a direction that does not serve this station.

From the west end of town the Victoria line is three or four stops and beats any car. From the north the Northern line drops straight in. Buses along the Euston Road run all night, and the Victoria and Northern lines run through the night at weekends, so a late finish is never the obstacle. A car at six in the evening, on the other hand, is a genuinely optimistic way to arrive.

Bookings built around a departure board

Say what the two fixed points are and the desk fills the middle. A two hour gap at £500 is enough for dinner and a proper conversation. Ninety minutes at £400 is enough for one of those two, and she will tell you honestly which. Three hours at £700 takes in a gallery, a table and the four minute walk back.

Nobody here minds a departure that cuts an evening short, and nobody will let you miss a train for the sake of the last twenty minutes. If a flight lands late or a meeting overruns, one message is enough. She will be standing where she said she would be, with the station clock in view.

The women who work this end of the road

Luna and Stacy are both anchored at Euston. Luna starts in the galleries rather than a bar, has favourites in there and will take you straight to them, and checks your platform without being asked. Stacy walks you round the back of the station to Drummond Street, orders without consulting anybody and tells you when to leave for the train, and she is right, and she does not make a fuss about being right.

Eight minutes east, Nancy and Sonya cover the St Pancras hotels and Liana and Samanta work the canal side at Kings Cross. All six reach an address here in a matter of minutes, and the rest of the list is within half an hour.

Ten minutes in any direction

East along the road, the Gothic terminus is eight minutes on foot and the water behind Kings Cross a minute or two beyond it. West, the Inner Circle and the gardens of Regent's Park are about twelve minutes past Great Portland Street and belong to a slower evening entirely. North, Camden Town is two stops on the Northern line and is where a Euston evening goes when it decides not to end.
