Finsbury Park escorts for N4, thirty seconds from the barriers

Everything is closer than you expect

The Park Theatre is on Clifton Terrace, thirty seconds from the station barriers, which is the shortest walk to a curtain anywhere in north London. Its foyer is roughly the size of a living room, the plays are often new and occasionally difficult, and the whole thing finishes early enough to leave the evening intact. The Faltering Fullback is six minutes away on Perth Road and has a garden that climbs the back of the building in terraces and platforms until it simply runs out of pub, which sounds ridiculous in print and works perfectly in July.

North of the station Green Lanes runs for well over a mile, and the grills and bakeries along it keep their ovens going past midnight with the bread still arriving after eleven. South and west, Finsbury Park itself covers a hundred and ten acres, with the gate by the station being, according to everybody who runs here, the wrong one to use.

Rooms are a short ride away, not a short walk

N4 has no hotel of its own. It is a residential postcode with a very large station attached, and that combination has never produced a lobby. Guests who want a room stay one or two stops away and come up, or the booking happens at a private address, which is what most Finsbury Park bookings are.

N1 0UY is two stops south on the Victoria line and about ten minutes door to door. N1C 4TB sits beside the platforms at King's Cross, four stops and roughly twelve minutes. WC1H 8EG is on the Euston Road opposite the same station. None of the three is in Finsbury Park and none of them is a partner of ours; companions arrive at all of them as guests, on the same terms as anywhere else.

For a flat or a house here, send the street and the number. The roads either side of the park run parallel for a long way and a driver left with a postcode alone will put her on the wrong side of the railway.

The interchange, and the four ways out

Finsbury Park station is two minutes from the theatre and carries the Piccadilly line, the Victoria line and National Rail services north out of King's Cross. The Victoria and Piccadilly share a platform in each direction, which is why an interchange here takes about forty seconds and why companions coming from the west find this the least troublesome journey on the site. Manor House, ten minutes north up Green Lanes, is Piccadilly only. Arsenal, ten minutes west, is also Piccadilly and is the station to avoid entirely on a match night. Harringay Green Lanes, twelve minutes north, is on the London Overground.

Buses run along Green Lanes and Seven Sisters Road all night, every night. The Victoria line runs through the night at weekends. A car into the middle of town takes twenty minutes at eleven and rather more at six. On a night when sixty thousand people are leaving the stadium, the honest advice is to meet after the crowd has gone or on the far side of the park.

Why N4 takes short notice

Because the journey in is simple from almost everywhere, this is the postcode where a booking made at seven for eight actually works. An hour at £250 suits an arrival or a gap between two other things. Two hours at £500 is enough for one place on Green Lanes done properly. Three at £700 lets a companion show you two, which is generally the better evening and certainly the better meal.

Appetite is a genuine planning question here rather than a joke, so say how hungry you expect to be when you write. If the theatre is part of it, send the curtain time. If a match is on, say so, and the desk will move the start rather than have anybody fight a crowd for a pavement.

Companions in N4

Laura and Rosa both work Finsbury Park and between them cover most of what it does. Laura is the easiest name on the whole list to arrange at short notice, meets people at the barriers rather than inside the tiny foyer, and will hold an exact hour if you give her a train. Rosa books around food rather than around a clock, claims the level of the pub garden that catches the last of the sun, and orders more on Green Lanes than two people need, on purpose.

Two stops south, Bianka, Milena and Tina come up from Islington in ten minutes. Uphill to the west, Karolina and Patricia travel across from Highgate. Everyone else reaches N4 easily, which is rather the point of the place.

Around the park

South, Islington is two stops on the Victoria line and a mile of high street. West and uphill, the village on the ridge is fifteen minutes by bus and belongs to a slower evening. North west, Muswell Hill is the W7 bus up the hill, a genuine half hour and worth it for the view. South west, Kings Cross is four stops and puts a mainline arrival in N4 within a quarter of an hour.
